How can we live in the present when we have plans to make? We have to figure out a way to get our kids through college, plan our retirement, and the list goes on and on.

How about when we reach the golden years? Someone once said, “Aging isn’t for the faint at heart.” There is a lot of truth to this statement. The golden years present a unique set of problems. There is the struggle with one’s health, new aches and pains enter into the picture – some of them are permanent. And there’s the fact that there are certain things that we can’t do anymore – like jogging, working all day in the yard, or even spending a full day at the office (for those of us who are still working).

Dealing with Life

And there we have to deal with a changing world around us. The new generation completely uproots and destroys things that we once held dear and cherished. There are technologies that we have to learn in order to keep up with our surrounding world.

And perhaps the most painful for some of us is the regret. We realize that many of our life options are gone – never to be available again. We think about the many things we intended to do – but didn’t. And there is that difference we wanted to make – but didn’t.

Of course, you cannot think about aging without considering our immortality. Like everything else, some of us view this differently than others. Some of us see death as liberation – perhaps a new beginning, depending on your faith. While there are lots of religions out there who believe in the heavens, those we study Buddhism prefers to see the world as truly exists now.

How to Live in the Present

Many of them have great methods and techniques for living in the present. Let us examine five of these methods.

1) Do not wait for things. 

This is such a common mistake in society today. So many of us spend our lives working for something this is to be obtained years into the future. Certainly, it is wise to plan, but the plans need not eliminate the joys and life experiences of today.

Do not rob you and your loved ones the joys of today. Make room in your plans for living in the present.

2) Welcome all things in your life, push nothing away.

Another common mistake is to only acknowledge things which bring joy in your life. And then push away the hurtful experiences and try to forget them.

If you do this, then you are robbing yourself of living fully in the human experience. Painful moments are just as important as the joyful ones – they give us perspective and wisdom. Also, accepting the bad things in your life will reduce your fears as well.

3) Bring your whole self to every experience.

Sometimes we strive to bring our best self to a situation. This is not the best approach. We need to offer ourselves in its entirety in every situation – bad traits and all.

When we neglect to bring our whole self, we are not accepting our imperfections. We must learn to accept who we are in our entirety.

4) Find a peaceful place in the middle of things.

When life is hectic and you do not know the answers at the moment, then you need to have a peaceful place to collect yourself. I have heard people describe this as going to the edge of chaos for rest. However you choose to deal with this, we all need a place of rest to recharge our spirit and souls.

5) Cultivate a don’t-know mind. 

As we look upon things, our perceptions are always influenced by our experiences. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to not have a bias when we perceive things.

The objective is the “don’t know” mind is to try to view the world around us without these biases and to be as objective as we possibly can. Plato described the real world as “forms” that none of us will ever because of our clouded perceptions.

Bali Fears Volcano Eruption As 145,000 Flee Their HomesThere is no doubt that 2017 will be remembered as the year of natural disasters. After several hurricanes and earthquakes have inflicted immense damage to mankind, now we are seeing Bali get threatened by a potential volcano eruption.

Mount Agung Has Not Erupted In Decades

Around 145,000 people who live on these Indonesian islands of Bali have chosen to leave their homes. They only see danger and risk in remaining in the vicinity of Mount Agung, which is a volcano that has been exhibiting signs of eruption according to local scientist and officials.

This volcano which has an elevation of 9,944 feet happens to be the highest peak in all of Bali. The last time this peak erupted was in the 1960s, when it destroyed villages and killed around 1,700 people from the mudflows, the hot gas clouds, and lava ash and fragments.

The local authorities have been warning people as far away as 12 kilometers (or 7.5 miles), around the volcano and urging them vacate the area and seek safe shelter somewhere else.

Many of these people that have recently fled are nowhere to be found within this evacuation zone, thus, they have departed simply from the uncertainty and the risks that are apparent in the effected regions.

Local seismic meters are recording large increases in underground activity around the volcano. This was first observed in mid-September and actually resulted in a 4.3 magnitude earthquake recently. Satellites are also detecting new steam emissions as well as thermal areas that are located in the volcano’s center and crater, and the steam clouds have been seen plummeting above the volcano summit, as reported by the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

And the center explicitly urged and warned that the “exact date and time of future eruptions cannot be predicted.”

The authorities are saying that they have supplies that could last for maybe a month for supplying around 475 camps. The center spokesman was Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, and has been providing periodic updates in social media and particularly on Twitter.

Local Cattle Need Safe Shelter

Not only are people at risk, there is a lot of local livestock who is also in a precarious situation – and this includes approximately 30,000 cattle. Authorities are telling us that around 10,000 head have been move to safely already, but there is still another 20,000 who need to be evacuation and shelter. Authorities are urging local citizens to step forward and volunteer to provide these cattle with a warm bed and safe shelter. It is hopeful that many citizens will step forward and heed their request. Could these be some free steaks involved? Just sayin’ … Volunteers are entering villages to gather cats, dogs, pets, and other animals that have been left behind.

The Bali economy very heavily depends on tourism, and local leaders have been trying to convince others that this volcano is not something that should be considered a threat to tourists – as long as they remain away from the danger zone. Mount Agung is located in southern Bali and is around 35 miles northeast of Kuta, which is considered the main area for tourists.

“For our brothers and sisters from abroad, of course Bali is still safe,” said Made Mangku Pastika recently, who happens to be the governor of the island.

This is an old tale. It began with all the fear-mongering WW II posters that warned soldiers concerning the awful venereal disease (VD). Most Americans are quite terrible when trying to talk about sex, and much worse when discussing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Are STDs Becoming More Problematic?

In 2013, as one study discovered that 50% of patients who visited Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) clinics had been unwilling to allow health insurance to pay the cost of these visits—most likely due to privacy concerns, scientists have concluded. During 2016, the US budget for “Abstinence Only Until Marriage” which promotes sex education in public schools—has shown over and over again to be completely ineffective in reducing both sexually transmitted infections and teen pregnancies—was boosted up to $85 million annually. For instance, typical high school health courses comprise of fewer than 4 hours used in discussing pregnancy prevention and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) combined, and that 87 percent permit guardians to keep their children from receiving this coursework.

So it is really not that shocking to hear about how these rates of infections are rising rather than going down. And because of the lack of education as well as discourse regarding these health issues, it just makes sense for Americans to interpret these findings from the CDC’s yearly Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report as some type of moral decline. So How Have Infection Rates Changed?

This new report from the CDC has not included data which refutes this fact. It should also be noted that herpes has not been included in this 2016 report.

But it is very true—and also very troubling—that gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis have all become more prevalent from the year 2015 to the year 2016. The CDC has reported about 1.6 million instances of chlamydia, 470,000 new incidents of gonorrhea, and approximately 28,000 cases of syphilis.

The chlamydia rates have risen by 4.7 percent and reports of increases virtually in all regions across the country. While gonorrhea rates had dropped to all-time lows in 2009, it has increased by more than 18 percent from the year 2015. And while syphilis hit its a historic low in 2000, it has since increased steadily. There was a 17.6 percent rise from the year 2015 to 2016, these increases were observed in women and men in all regions. Syphilis cases are by far more common in men who choose to have sex with other men, but the infection rates rose by nearly 36 percent in the year 2016, which was twice the increase observed in men.

Should people be worried about these infection rates?

There is good news to all this dreary data. And that is the fact all of these infections happen to be bacterial, which mean they are typically very easy to treat.

This happens to be the big message from the CEO of Nvidia Jensen Huang. He made this statement while attending the 2017 GPU Technology Conference (GTC) that took place in Beijing, China. He emphasized that graphics processors will eventually totally replace CPUs, as has been reported.

History of Moore’s Law

For those who do not remember, Moore’s Law was the name assigned to observations from Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in the year of 1965. Moore had took note of the fact that the amount of transistors for each square inch on an integrated circuit was doubling each year, and he predicted this would indeed happen over the next decade. He came back later and revised this prediction to every couple of years.

Most of the time when Moore’s Law is thought to be ending, it is because of technical obstacles which block the progress of jamming more and more transistors into smaller and smaller areas, and while maintaining identical jumps in performance. Huang agrees in part with this, so much as it deals with CPU performance—he claimed that as CPU transistors has had a growth rate of 50 percent each year, the jump in performance has only been 10 percent.

Another Reason Moore’s Law May Be Dead

The second reason he feels that Moore’s Law is no longer applicable is simply because of its ability to maintain pace with the GPU design advancements. Huang mentioned how the GPUs were growing in computational ability across the years, and the ways they are much better suited for artificial intelligence advancements.

Huang also stated that GPUs will be replacing CPUs very soon, because at this juncture, designers are actually hindered working out highly advanced parallel architectures for the outdated CPUs.

It is pretty obvious that Intel will disagree with this outlook by Nvidia, and has done so on several occasions. About a year ago, CEO of Intel Brian Krzanich had downplayed reports that Moore’s Law was coming to a close.

“In my 34 years in the semiconductor industry, I have witnessed the advertised death of Moore’s Law no less than four times. As we progress from 14 nanometer technology to 10 nanometer and plan for 7 nanometer and 5 nanometer and even beyond, our plans are proof that Moore’s Law is alive and well,” Krzanich said in his blog posting which outlined future plans of Intel. “Intel’s industry leadership of Moore’s Law remains intact, and you will see continued investment in capacity and R&D to ensure so.”

Even recently, Intel has brought up the topic of Moore’s Law when they were showcasing for the very first time a 10nm Cannon Lake wafer at their Technology and Manufacturing Day which took place in Beijing.

“Intel manufacturing processes advance according to Moore’s Law, delivering ever more functionality and performance, improved energy efficiency and lower cost-per-transistor with each generation,” stated Stacy Smith, who is the group president of Manufacturing and Sales. “We are pleased to share in China for the first time important milestones in our process technology roadmap that demonstrate the continued benefits of driving down the Moore’s Law curve.”

Bascially, all of these amounts to chest thumping on each side, as there is nothing really at stake other than boasting rights for each company. While Huang is not necessarily claiming that GPUs could power up consumer PCs and desktops while dumping CPUs in the trash, he does see GPUs playing a huge role with supercomputers in the future.

Two Black Holes Have Collided

Everyone pretty much knows that black holes are not easy to find and detect, but what about when two black holes collide? The good news is that this collision was detected by three different observatories located in two continents.

More specifically, these observatories came from Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors located in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington. And it was also detected from an observatory in Europe near Pisa, Italy at the Virgo detector.

In August, detectors on two continents recorded gravitational wave signals from a pair of black holes colliding. This discovery, announced today, is the first observation of gravitational waves by three different detectors, marking a new era of greater insights and improved localization of cosmic events now available through globally networked gravitational-wave observatories.

The collision was observed Aug. 14 at 10:30:43 a.m. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) using the two National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors located in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington, and the Virgo detector, funded by CNRS and INFN and located near Pisa, Italy.

The joint detection was considered to be milestone in an effort to “unlock the mysteries of the universe.” This was the first discovery of its kind made in a partnership.

Here are some of the details of the waves:

The detected gravitational waves — ripples in space and time — were emitted during the final moments of the merger of two black holes, one with a mass about 31 times that of our sun, the other about 25 times the mass of the sun. The event, located about 1.8 billion light-years away resulted in a spinning black hole with about 53 times the mass of our sun — that means about three solar masses were converted into gravitational-wave energy during the coalescence.

“This is just the beginning of observations with the network enabled by Virgo and LIGO working together,” says LSC spokesperson David Shoemaker of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “With the next observing run planned for fall 2018, we can expect such detections weekly or even more often.”

These observatories are very high tech and are already beginning to pay dividends in research. As described by many scientists, this is the first of many discoveries that is expected.

LIGO has transitioned into a second-generation gravitational-wave detector, known as Advanced LIGO, that consists of two identical interferometers. Beginning operations in September 2015, Advanced LIGO has conducted two observing runs. The second observing run, “O2,” began Nov. 30, 2016, and ended Aug. 25, 2017.

The Virgo detector, also now a second-generation detector, joined the O2 run Aug. 1, 2017 at 10 a.m. UTC. The real-time detection Aug. 14 was triggered with data from all three LIGO and Virgo instruments.

“It is wonderful to see a first gravitational-wave signal in our brand new Advanced Virgo detector only two weeks after it officially started taking data,” says Jo van den Brand of Nikhef and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, spokesperson of the Virgo collaboration. “That’s a great reward after all the work done in the Advanced Virgo project to upgrade the instrument over the past six years.”

When an event is detected by a three-detector network, the area in the sky likely to contain the source shrinks significantly, improving distance accuracy. The sky region for GW170814 has a size of only 60 square degrees, more than 10 times smaller than the size using data available from the two LIGO interferometers alone.

Saber Tooth Cats Had an Amazing Physique

It is well known fact between paleontologists that S. fatalis — who is now extinct, but lived on the Earth from around 37,000 to 9,000 years ago — possessed an Arnold Schwarzenegger type body. This fierce cat had an extremely broad chest along with short, stout limbs, said the study leader Katherine Long, who is a master’s student in the Department of Geological Sciences at California State Polytechnic University.

“But we didn’t really know too much about their kittens,” Long explained to Live Science. “We just know [that] as adults, they were just really, really muscle-bound.”

In order to study these cat facts, Long had measured the circumference and length of around 200 limb bones which had been obtained from the La Brea Tar Pits in LA, an area from which asphalt seeps naturally to the surface. These limb bones had come from kitties all across different ages. As Long had the ability to develop a chart of growth for the species, which shows the way they had grown in length and robustness as they got older.

Saber Tooth Cat Bones were Compared to Bones of Other Big Cat Species

This is when Long as well as her colleagues began to compare the saber tooth cat growth chart along with the growth rates of other kitty species, which included the cougar (Puma concolor), the tiger (Panthera tigris), the American cave lion (Panthera atrox), the lion (Panthera leo), the wildcat (Felis silvestris) and the serval (Leptailurus serval). Data indicated that the saber tooth cat bones were much more robust and stronger than Panthera bones.

“It was interesting to see that although we have these really robust, huge [saber-toothed cat] animals, they are still growing just as delicately as a small jungle wildcat,” Long said.

This study is definitely a great start into learning how these saber tooth kittens lived and grew, but we know these is more work ahead for us, stated Julie Meachen, who is currently an assistant professor of anatomy and a vertebrate paleontologist at Des Moines University, but was not a part of this study.

For example, in order to learn how saber toothed kitties lived and grew, “you need internal measurements of the bones,” Meachen said. This can be accomplished using X-rays or even computed tomography (CT) scan of bones from the cats that illuminates the region of bone marrow located within. With this, scientists can get a much more reliable idea of the actual cross sectional region of the hard bone which supported the cats’ massive weight.

“If you take cross-sectional area from just diameter, basically you’re modeling the limb as a solid beam, which is not the case at all,” Meachen stated. “So, it’s giving you a false sense of the ability of the bone.”

Nonetheless, these findings are a great place to start to learn more about the growth of saber tooth kitties.
